Indian benchmark indices erased their early gains and turned lower on August 24, amid profit booking and weakness in select heavyweight stocks. Metal and information technology shares emerged as the top gainers, while public sector banks were among the worst performers. Heavyweight HDFC Bank pared its early gains, while financial services stocks such as Bajaj Finserv, SBI Life Insurance, Axis Bank, and Bajaj Finance extended their losses, declining around 1% each.
At 1:50 PM on August 24, the Nifty was down ~0.35% at 24,169, while the Sensex had fallen ~260 points to trade at 77,271.
Asian markets are broadly weak, with the Kospi declining around 3.12% and the Hang Seng Index falling about 2%.
European markets are trading mixed.
